solution: |
|
The client desires to create a building that could be used as a
prototype for future residence halls. Some of the principles used in designing
the building are: create smaller “houses” for the students and the residence
faculty members living on campus; utilize “green” technologies to help mitigate
some of the environmental needs of the residents; have the building
aesthetically compliment the campus. The solution provided addresses these in
the scale and massing of the building, the orientation of the building on the
site and the materials and assemblies employed to create the building. Student
bedrooms flank each side of the main corridor, while the primary common space is
central to the structure. 3 Faculty townhomes are included in the building and
are designed to encourage families to reside on campus.
The building is designed to meet LEED-gold standards, which will include 3
roof-mounted wind turbines generating 40% of the annual electricity consumption,
a geothermal heating/cooling system, locally harvested and manufactured wall
panels, and zero-emission finishes throughout. |
