challenge: |
|
To transform an older gym
into a new performing arts center. |

|
solution: |
|
An existing stage in the gymnasium
was expanded to accommodate a full theatre
production, offering students an opportunity to
learn how to operate fly rigging, catwalk systems,
and sound and lighting equipment. Storage was
made available in the stage's wings.
Two-thirds of the seating in the center was designed
as retractable in order to accommodate a flexible
multi-functional space. The additional third
of the seating is located in the elevated balcony.
As the existing envelope of the building could not
be increased, our solution was to pair the stage and
the seating into one acoustic space. The
acoustics were supplemented by adding a curved
"throat" to the proscenium wall. By doing this, we
created an excellent venue for both natural spoken
and amplified performances. |
