federation of protestant welfare agencies, new york, ny
client
“Brian Baer came to our rescue! The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies is
a non-profit advocacy and capacity building organization for community-based and
church-based human service programs in New York City. We own our 1896 landmark
building, and needed to bring our facility into code compliance with the Fire
Department of New York’s Local Law 26. This included submitting electronic files
of each floor of our building to the FDNY – something that simply didn’t exist,
and something that we simply didn’t have the money for in our limited budget.
Enter The 1%, a pro bono architecture program of Public Architecture, which
introduced us to Brian Baer and Baer Architecture. Brian agreed to
volunteer his and his firm’s time to produce drawings that would be ready to
issue to FDNY. He spent a lot of time with us walking through the building,
reviewing existing documentation, and creating the documentation we needed to
comply with Local Law 26 – and on a pro bono basis. We couldn’t have paid
someone to do a better or more professional job - and since we couldn’t pay
someone, we are extremely grateful to have had someone as talented, gracious and
generous as Brian working with us.
Baer Architecture lists community building as one of their core values – and our
experience with them proves that they really live by their values. Thank you,
Brian”!

“As a not-for-profit arts organization dealing with many moving targets, we
really needed a firm that could provide affordable, pragmatic solutions to our
diverse needs. Baer Architecture has gone above and beyond to not only
provide quality architectural services for us, in addition they've delivered
that service in a clear, educative framework. Our ongoing relationship with
them, especially in a high-pressure New York City business environment, is a
sincere pleasure.

“Baer Architecture starts by listening to your schools wants and needs.
Then appropriately challenges the assumptions to ensure broad considerations
before guiding everyone to a consensus that results in a well designed, highly
functional, environmentally sensitive facility that meets or beats your budget.
In 34 years of leading private schools I have not worked with anyone better.

“Brian Baer, president of Baer Architecture, worked closely with
Greenfield Community College to conduct a feasibility study for its’ new Visual
and Performing Arts Center. Mr. Baer was prepared, professional, and thoughtful
at all times. With his help, the College developed a comprehensive plan and a
solid foundation for the next steps of this exciting project. I would not
hesitate to use Baer Architecture in the future.

“And finally Brian … I just want to add that your work and Michelle's are very
important, specifically to nonprofits. Hopefully our lack of immediate funds
(Nonprofits as a whole) doesn't take too much away from the luster of helping us
to increase our capacities to make a difference and to improve our services. As
nonprofits we get caught in our dreams of Utopia. These latest tasks of EAFC are
our most ambitious but I will prove to be one of the hardest working so that we
accomplish every plan we set to execute. As always, thank you for your service.

“Over the course of my nine years at Hillside School I have worked closely with
Brian Baer on a number of projects. While I could write for pages on his work
two key thoughts come to mind:
- First, the greatest compliment you can give any architect is to
rehire him. We have been blessed to work collaboratively with Brian on six
projects - thus have rehired him five times!
- Our school and our campus have been transformed with Brian’s
guidance, creativity, and commitment to problem-solving, collaborative
relationships and sustainable design that suits our 150 acre campus.”

“This letter is in support of Baer Architecture, and Brian Baer
specifically. We selected Baer Architecture through an interview
process two years ago. Since that time he has helped us with several projects
on campus. He is currently serving as the architect on the renovation of
Winston House, a seventeen bed residential facility on campus. He is also the
architect on the renovation of Olsen hall, a sixty-eight bed dormitory style
hall on campus. Finally, we have him working on the concept of converting an
attic in our newest residence hall to fifteen singles. This would be
accomplished by adding a glass dormer to the existing roof.
We have been impressed with both Brian’s creativity and his ability to work
within our needs for practical solutions within a budget. Brian is sensitive to
our needs, particularly in the residence halls, for using robust materials that
stand up to student abuse but still look good, and accomplishing all this for a
reasonable price. He is sensitive to environmental issues. Brian has been
patient and worked well with town officials, which is extremely important to
us. He has been willing to work with us on a cost per hour basis when we needed
architectural approval of drawings to meet town requirements.
In short, we are delighted to have located someone who combines both creativity
and practicality. We have greatly enjoyed working with Brian, and expect that
you will too.”

“I wanted to thank you for all of your help, input, drive and commitment to SLS.
I have enjoyed working with you on each of the projects, especially the athletic
center. Your architecture on this project was outstanding. On what do I base
this? The fact that this building fits St. Luke’s like a hand in a glove. The
school will get years of enjoyment and good use from this building. In
addition, the project looks as if it has always been part of the campus. You
should be proud of your work! I look forward to finishing the PAC and riding
off into the sunset knowing we made a very positive impact on St. Luke’s School
together!”

“We are very pleased with the working relationship we have established with Mr.
Brian Baer and view this relationship as a work in progress. We are currently
working with Mr. Baer to revise out approved Master Facility Plan. We wish to
accommodate a speedier timeline for the Phase I of construction for a new studio
building and must make some revisions to accomplish this task. Mr. Baer is
helping our trustees to think through this process.
The complete Master Facility Plan planning process took over nine months. Mr.
Baer’s firm was willing to work with out organization to find the right amount
of time that would allow us to complete our task and work within our limited
budget. His participation lasted about 14 weeks and required regularly
scheduled weekly meetings. The process consisted of discussion and consensus on
the following: Statement of Purpose, Values of the Organization, Goals, Sacred
Cows, Site Context, Zoning Analysis, Facility Area Analysis, Existing
Conditions, Diagrammatic Options, Adjacency Options, Selected Options (two),
Final Plan. Committee members looked forward to meetings and discussion was
always engaging and fun. During this process, Mr. Baer worked easily with
trustees and really listened to what each individual had to say. His ability to
listen was manifested in each week’s visual presentation of what had been
discussed the week prior. Brian is responsive and works well with trustees to
articulate their thoughts.
The Final Master Facility Plan was produced in hard copy and power point
versions.
Our experience could not have been more positive, and in fact, we are still
working with Mr. Baer to produce several presentations to foundations and
potential funders. We intend to continue our process with the firm through
construction.”

“Baer Architecture has always been out in front of their commitment to
Hillside whether it is with motivating their engineers to accelerate the
process, interacting with local officials relative to permitting and approvals
or rolling up their sleeves to resolve an issue on site with the Construction
Manager. All of the projects Baer Architecture has done at Hillside have
met their schedules, some which were very aggressive and have met or improved on
the budget commitments. With this, I highly recommend Baer Architecture
to any perspective client.”
